AREQUIPA
“Arequipa, The white city”
- Arequipa located at 2,230 a.s.l.,
is the second largest city of Perú after Lima;
The Capital, it has 620,000 inhabitants.
- Name Arequipa comes from the
Quechua word "Ariquepay" which means "Yes, stay". It's not just by
chance however that its name has held true
throughout time; in the city streets, in its 'sillar'
walls and in the attitude of it's people you
feel a peculiar energy, a strange impulse,
inviting you to stay on in the city
- The ancient churches and
convents, the old mansions are built out of 'sillar',
a white volcano stone building material which,
when the sun's light hits it, produces a
glimmer, a extraordinary glow, therefore causing
people to affectionately call "La Ciudad Blanca
de Arequipa" or "Arequipa, The White City"
- The city keeps its ancient
architectural from the colonial time, but also
shows a modern side with many luxurious hotels.
Arequipa gives tourists the opportunity to spend
a pleasant time in the city and its outskirts.
- Suggestion to visit in the city:
the main square or Plaza de Armas, “La Compañia
de Jesus” church which has cloisters with ashlar,
and the Santa Catalina Convent should not be
missed
HOW TO GET THERE A daily commercial flights from Lima (1 hours), from Cusco (30 minutes) and from Juliaca-Puno (20 minutes) brings you to Arequipa.
